New constructions to the North intended for seating of the yard and administrative agencies. On South side larger new galleries with overhead lighting on the second floor were added to the museum. Operation progressed quickly under Visconti’s observation, and after his death which followed in 1853 under the leadership of Hector Lefyuel; the ceremonial opening the emperor of “New Louvre” was held in 1857. Work in interiors was continued: museum exposures were placed in new buildings; east part of Big gallery which third was in cracks was restored; the Pavilion of Flora was rebuilt, high reliefs for it were executed by Jean Baptiste Carpo (1863-1866). In the museum, in its different departments classification of the collections which are replenished by numerous new arrivals was carried out.
An age of “abundance” was followed by catastrophe. In May, 1871, in the last days of the Commune, the Tuileries palace enveloped the fire. The museum adjoining it hardly avoided corrupting.
